The town of Oakey, with approximately 3,901 residents, is located on the Warrego highway just 29kms north-west of Toowoomba. Local industries are rural based, with the emphasis on beef, a meatworks is located near the town. There are also coal mining operations in the surrounding districts. Just outside town, the Australian Army Aviation Centre provides a training facility and also hosts a Singapore Armed Forces Helicopter Squadron. There are also coal mining operations in adjacent districts.
Oakey has a large range of retail and commercial outlets, a library and an R.S.L.. Other amenities include a cultural centre, community centre, olympic size swimming pool and golf course.
The town has a local hospital providing emergency services and inpatient care as well as a large co-located nursing home facility. There a two private general practices in the town. Oakey has a junior state school and state high school, as well as day-care and pre-school centres. The university of Queensland also has a campus for equine studies in the town.
