The region is facing new challenges. These include the 70,000 new residents over the next 20 years, resource development within the Surat Basin and funding infrastructure. The new planning scheme considers these issues.

One regional planning scheme means there will be a more efficient administration of planning and development in the region, instead of operating with the current eight planning schemes at the moment.
