Car Parking Strategy for the Toowoomba CBD

Purpose of the Studysurveyarea

Toowoomba Regional Council is developing a Car Parking Strategy for the Toowoomba CBD.

The purpose of this study is to undertake a technical assessment of existing parking issues around the Toowoomba CBD and to then develop a car parking strategy for the Toowoomba City Centre that addresses short (<2years), medium (2-10 years) and long term (>10years) requirements.

Railyards Precinct

This week Member for Toowoomba North MPTrevor Watts and Mayor Paul Antonio unveiled plans for redevelopment of rail land in the Toowoomba CBD. Mr Watts confirmed the project will involve State Government owned land between Ruthven, Russell, Bridge and Bellevue Streets, saying "the project will become the jewel in the crown of the city, on the same level as Southbank and Roma St Parklands in Brisbane".

Mayor Antonio said: "We could not be happier. It will be a catalytic project. We look forward to working with the State Government now the land has been opened up to ensure the project becomes a reality".

NDRRA flood recovery program

Since the 2010/2011 record flood events, Council has undertaken the largest flood recovery program the region has ever seen. This program was interrupted by further flooding in early 2013.

The impact of the 2010 and 2011 floods resulted in a local road network reconstruction program worth more than double the cost of council's annual capital and maintenance works program. This was completed in late 2013.

Works to repair damage caused by the 2013 floods is currently underway and should be completed by late 2014.

Flood mitigation

Council is embarking on a extensive program of flood mitigation measures starting with detention basins along East and West Creeks in Toowoomba.

Known as the Gowrie Creek Catchment Management Strategy, the plans include upgrading or construction of detention basins and other measures that will reduce downstream flooding and help prevent the inundation of residences, properties and businesses, particularly in the CBD.

Sustainable Transport Strategy
