History - Past mayors - Pittsworth

The Pittsworth area was originally part of a larger Jondaryan Shire. This caused some dissatisfaction and, following representations to the Department of Local Government, a ballot was held with the result that Pittsworth was proclaimed a local authority on 24 April 1913.

The first council meeting was held at the Lyceum Hall Pittsworth on 9th July 1913 at which W.P. Copp was elected chairman by 5 votes to 4.

The same meeting saw applications being called for the of position of Council Clerk, where Mr. W. O'Hara was appointed acting clerk; discussion took place on acquiring a site for the new shire office; appointment of a foreman of works was discussed; purchase of a safe, books and stationary was authorised; a new benefited area be investigated; and the rate struck for all three divisions was set at 1 and 1/4 pence in the pound

A new council office and hall was constructed in 1914 at a cost of 766 Pounds.

In November 1913 it was decided to call applications for a maintenance man. The successful applicant was to supply a dray, two horses, plough, scoop and all necessary tools.

In 1956 a new Civic Centre consisting of a Town Hall and Shire Chambers was completed at a cost of 62,000 pounds

Prior to the 2008 merger into Toowoomba Regional Council, The Pittworth Shire Council comprised of seven Councillors, made up of a mayor who is elected independently, and six Councillors.
