Cultural merit of local history recognised Print E-mail

Toowoomba and district residents have access to an archive collection of documents, drawings, photographs and written material charting the discovery, early settlement and expansion of the Darling Downs.

A report was released on July 3 recognising items of national significance in the Local History and Robinson collections housed at Toowoomba’s Local History Library at 476 Ruthven Street.

Highfields road works Print E-mail

Motorists using O’Brien Road in Highfields can expect traffic delays over coming months.

Toowoomba Regional Council is undertaking stormwater drainage works along O’Brien Road between Community Court and Reis Road. The works are expected to take approximately four months from the end of June.

Council warns of hefty fines for illegal tyre dumping Print E-mail

Toowoomba Regional Council is urging people to dispose of tyres correctly following the discovery of more than 200 illegally dumped tyres at several locations in recent weeks.

Oakey Service Centre officers recently found more than 140 tyres dumped in a drain near Carrington Road and another 65 car tyres and 24 truck tyres on the Toowoomba-Cecil Plains Road.

Councillors to visit Crows Nest, Goombungee, Oakey and Pittsworth Print E-mail

Local community groups in Crows Nest, Goombungee, Oakey and Pittsworth will have an opportunity to meet face-to-face with their Toowoomba Regional councillors on Tuesday, August 5.

Community access days are held in four district service centres across the region on a fortnightly basis.

Council recently endorsed the establishment of community access days to be held in district service centres on a fortnightly basis.

Cooby Dam re-opens for fishing Print E-mail

Loveday Cove and Cooby Dam wall have been reopened for fishing and recreational pursuits.

This follows a reduction in blue-green algae blooms to a level considered safe for recreational fishing, either from the shore or from a boat.

Cooby Dam wall and all recreational infrastructure is also now open for use.

Crows Nest public art opportunity Print E-mail

Expressions of interest are called from regional artists to submit proposals for public artworks in Crows Nest.

With the theme War in Action, the artist needs to design, produce and install about six panel designs (measuring at least 60cm x 80cm) to be inlaid into a footpath and/or wall installation by early October.

Regional students urged to enter environmental awards Print E-mail

Toowoomba Regional Council is spreading the word about environmental awareness and positive actions to the district’s school students.

Environmental and Community Services portfolio spokesperson Cr Bill Cahill and a council environment planner recently visited Pittsworth State School and Toowoomba’s Middle Ridge State School to promote the 2008 Environmental Excellence Awards.

Cr Cahill and the planner explained the importance of caring for the environment and encouraged the students and their teachers to enter the school section of the 2008 Awards.

Paju delegation returns with high hopes Print E-mail

There is considerable trade potential with South Korea for Darling Downs food and wine producers, according to Toowoomba Regional Council’s recent delegation to Seoul and sister city, Paju.

In a media briefing held at City Hall, Mayor Peter Taylor outlined discussions the delegation had with South Korean trade representatives that indicated a strong interest in sourcing local product from this region.

An artist’s personal account of her experience emigrating from Scotland to Australia is on display at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery.

Jill Kinnear’s Diaspora: textiles as paradox will be shown until July 20.

The Queensland-based artist has transformed hand-crafted textiles using a modern, technological process to symbolise a move from an old world to the colonies in the new world.

Council endorses rollout of ACTION 2050 community planning Print E-mail

Toowoomba Regional Council has endorsed the ACTION 2050 community planning project.

ACTION 2050 represents an ongoing council commitment to long-term community planning.  It signals an intent to finalise the our TOOWOOMBA towards 2050 project for Toowoomba city and to extend community planning processes across the balance of the regional Council area. It is intended that the various place-based activities will be integrated under a new regional vision.

New children's book about Toowoomba's history Print E-mail

Primary school students who have an interest in Toowoomba’s history will now be able to access the Local History Library’s publication of The Story of the Swamp: a children’s history of Toowoomba.

The book has been written by local librarian Jane M Smith and edited by Toowoomba Regional Council’s special collections librarian Jayne Fitzpatrick with information supplied by local historian Peter Cullen.

Hospital slashes water use by six million litres annually Print E-mail

St Vincent’s Hospital has cut its water consumption by six million litres a year with the support of the Queensland Government’s $55 million Business Water Efficiency Program (BWEP).

St Vincent’s, the largest acute private hospital on the Darling Downs, has invested more than $300,000 in water-saving initiatives, with the BWEP program providing $64,306 in financial support.

Waste collection fridge magnets being delivered Print E-mail

Toowoomba residents will soon receive their new fridge magnets showing recycling and green waste collection service details for the next 12 months.

Council and waste contractor J.J. Richards and Sons is currently delivering new fridge magnets for the 2008/2009 financial year to all residential properties in Toowoomba.

Environmental awards open to region Print E-mail

This year’s Environmental Excellence Awards will be searching for environmental champions from across the entire Toowoomba Regional Council area.

Environmental and Community Services spokesperson Cr Bill Cahill said he was excited the biennial awards program had been extended to encompass the newly amalgamated shires.

Toowoomba’s Heritage Treasures booklet released Print E-mail

Toowoomba Heritage Treasures book (link to find our more and download)The original Weis ‘Fruito Bar’ icecream is one of the more unusual entries in the Toowoomba’s Heritage Treasures booklet to be officially released on Sunday, May 11 at Platform 9, Toowoomba Railway Station.

The Weis bar is one of 43 Toowoomba heritage treasures that have been immortalised in the 21 page publication.

Keep your culture alive at 2008 Languages and Cultural Festival Print E-mail

The rich fabric of Toowoomba’s multicultural community will be on show at the third Languages and Cultural Festival in Queens Park on Sunday, August 10.

The 2008 festival will bring together multicultural organisations, schools, service clubs, government and non-government agencies and performers to highlight all the colours and character of our diverse community.

Muster up your old mobile phone Print E-mail

Toowoomba Regional Council is calling on the whole region to dig up their old mobile phones to help save the environment.

As part of its ongoing involvement in the national “Mobile Muster” recycling program, Council is encouraging residents to drop off any old or disused mobile phones so they can be recycled.

Woolshed Wins Heritage Rally Print E-mail

The Jondaryan Woolshed will host and organise the 2010 Queensland Heritage Rally.

The event was awarded to the Jondaryan Woolshed after the complex’s Chief Executive Officer John Osborne presented the Woolshed’s bid at the 2008 Queensland Heritage Rally in Rockhampton on the weekend.

The Queensland Heritage Rally is held every two years and attracts about 300 exhibitors from all over Australia including heritage tractors, steam engines, stationary engines, vintage cars and trucks.

Toowoomba Regional Council show holiday office arrangements Print E-mail

The majority of the Toowoomba Regional Council district service centres will be closed for business on the Toowoomba Royal Show public holiday on Thursday, April 10.

District Service Centres in Toowoomba, Clifton, Goombungee, Greenmount, Millmerran, Oakey and Pittsworth will be closed for business on April 10.
