Parking is regulated in the central traffic area to ensure available parking spaces are shared in a fair and equitable manner by both private and commercial motorists.
Parking fees are generally applied to all council's on-street and off-street car parking spaces.
What are the permitted parking time limits?
The time limit for metered spaces is displayed on the meter and on signs posted at each end of the group of meters. The signs display symbols such as 1P (1 hour) and 2P (2 hour) which indicate the maximum permitted parking time. It is an offence to park in a metered space for longer than the maximum permitted parking time.
Council has a number of off-street carparks. The Annand Street carpark has an area reserved for three (3) hour parking (designated by 3P signs) as well as all day parking. The Duggan Street and Central carparks have a small free 2 hour parking area with the remainder being an all day parking area.
At the Bus Interchange carpark on Neil Street you will be required to pay the attendant on exit. Parking in other council carparks requires you to purchase a ticket from the vending machine on site. This ticket is to be displayed printed side up on the dashboard of your vehicle.
Only holders of the red or blue Disabled Person Parking Permit issued by Queensland Transport are permitted to park in disability parking spaces. The Permit must be displayed on the windscreen or dashboard of a vehicle which is being used to transport disabled persons. Holders of these permits may also park in any metered space or in a council off-street car park free of charge.
In relation to standing in loading zones, the Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act, 1995 defines a commercial vehicle as "any motor vehicle (excluding a motor car or motor cycle) constructed, fitted or equipped for the carriage of goods". This excludes station wagons and generally excludes all other vehicles under the weight of 4.5 tonnes.
A vehicle not covered by the Act's definition may be approved by council as a commercial vehicle (conditions apply). Application forms are available from the Regulated Parking Section.
Most loading zones are reserved for use by commercial vehicles only. Other loading zones may be used by both commercial and other vehicles. If loading zones have a time limit of 20 minutes for commercial vehicles and 5 minutes for other vehicles, then carefully note the time limit that applies to your vehicle.
This sign indicates that the area is a loading zone between the hours of 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday and 8am to noon on Saturdays. During these hours commercial vehicles are permitted to park for a maximum of 20 minutes and all other vehicles are permitted to park a maximum of 5 minutes whilst actively engaged in loading or unloading goods.
Council has provided a number of free parking spaces with a 10 minute limit. These spaces are indicated by a traffic sign which reads P10 minute. Additional parking zones have been set aside for exclusive uses. They are clearly marked with traffic signs.
It is an offence to park within 20m on the approach side of a bus stop and 10m on the departure side.
It is an offence to park a vehicle wholly or partially on any footpath or in a vehicle entrance.
Regulated parking information and contact service is located at your local service centre.
