Cats are required to be registered within the TRC area within 14 days of:

  • The cat reaching the age of three (3) months.
  • The cat moving into the council area.
  • An owner acquiring a new cat.
  • Previous registration expiring (not cancelled or revoked).

You can register your cat/s at any of council service centre.

The Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008 (opens in new window) was introduced by the Queensland Government which required all local authorities to introduce compulsory cat registration from 1 July 2009.  From the same date the Act also required owners to ensure that any cat is microchipped before they are sold or given away.

Please use the Dog and Cat Registration Form below for all cat registrations.  (This form can also be used for registering your dog.)

Reciprocal cat registration now covers all Australian Local Governments where a cat is currently registered and satisfactory proof of registration is shown. A registration form is required to be completed by the customer and proof of current registration with another Local Government must be provided.

If you have recently taken ownership of a cat registered with TRC, a Change of Ownership form must be completed and signed by both the previous owner and you as the new owner. When change of ownership occurs, the vendor is responsible for changing microchip details with the microchip provider, while the TRC change of ownership form allows Council to change owner details on Council’s database.

Cat registrations expire the 30th of June each year. Council sends Registration Renewal notices one month prior to the expiry of the registration to allow cat owners sufficient time to ensure their animals remain currently registered at all times. Please note – if for some reason a registration renewal notice is not received, the responsibility to ensure cat/s remain currently registered with Council lies with the owner of the cat/s. In the event of the registration renewal notice not being received, contact Council and the appropriate reference numbers will be supplied so this registration can be paid by the due date.

Upon registering, you will be provided with a registration tag which your cat is required to wear under the Act.
