The November 30 Australia Day award deadline is fast looming, so don’t miss your chance to nominate someone who deserves special recognition.
The awards offer an opportunity to nominate those exceptional members of our community who have done the region proud through their artistic or cultural endeavours, achievements in their chosen sport or through dedicated community work.
Corporate Services portfolio leader Cr John McVeigh said time to nominate was running out and he encouraged TRC residents across the region to consider suitable candidates they felt worthy of recognition.
“Award winners come from all different walks of life, but their common bond is they have made their mark in their community by being prepared to go the extra mile, whether it’s on the stage or sporting field or through their efforts in rolling up their sleeves and helping their neighbours,” he said.
“These people possess an inspirational attitude that reflects how we can all play a part to better our communities. These are the people we want to acknowledge through the awards.
“But it’s not just individuals who deserve praise,” he said. “There are some wonderful events and community functions staged throughout the TRC area that not only provide first-rate entertainment but also showcase our region to the many visitors who travel to these events.”
Cr McVeigh said nominations were still being called for a range of local and regional Australia Day awards in the following categories:
Local Awards:
- Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year
- Cultural Award
- Sports Award
- Community Group / Event of the Year
Regional Awards:
- Regional Citizen of the Year
- Regional Young Citizen of the Year
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander - Leadership Award
Cr McVeigh said multiple nominations could be made for local and regional awards.
“Don’t say: I’ll get around to it later. The deadline is Monday, November 30 and I’d hate to think someone out there might not be recognised because of a late submission.
“Get that awards form filled out now and feel a sense of pride in knowing that you’ve given a local community event or a local hero a well-deserved pat on the back,” Cr McVeigh said.
Nomination forms, judging criteria and supporting information are available from the council’s website, any Council Service Centre or through the local organising committee.
