The tragic loses of WWII set in place the need to create a world organisation for promoting peace and friendship amongst nations.
Accordingly, on October 24, 1945, founding members ratified a treaty setting up the world body known as the United Nations.
Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Peter Taylor said TRC would mark the anniversary by flying the UN flag on Saturday.
“I often speak of the importance of strong ties, both in families and communities, and the many benefits that occur as a result of these close-knit relationships. I see a definite parallel with the United Nations as it mirrors these positives on a global scale,” Cr Taylor said.
“The UN brings together many diverse cultures, each with different political systems, traditions and beliefs. And each of these countries work together towards a common goal – to make our planet a better place – through environmental programs, health initiatives and by striving to bring an end to global conflict.
“It’s this united front that’s needed to help steer the world in a better direction by embracing peace and tolerance.
“It’s a vision to be supported and we at council take pride in flying the United Nations flag, to recognise its charter and acknowledge its continued push for a better tomorrow.”
