As well as displaying artworks from its permanent collections, Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery cooperates with the local community, and state and national bodies to mount an extensive annual exhibition program that demonstrates the vitality and challenge of artistic expression in its many forms.
Exhibitions of contemporary works, usually featured on the ground floor, change approximately monthly.
Exhibitions of historical materials, including artworks, maps, illustrated books and manuscripts, are presented on the first floor of the Gallery, and change every three to four months.
The Cam Robertson Gallery, named in honour of long-serving Gallery Trustee A.C. (Cam) Robertson OAM, is dedicated wholly to month-long exhibitions by local artists and arts groups.
Artists and craftspeople receive special incentive and recognition through two major acquisitive award exhibitions in the Gallery’s program.
The biennial Contemporary Wearables Jewellery Award (staged since 1988) invites prominent and the emerging jewellers from Australia and New Zealand to show their work in Toowoomba and, as part of a possible touring exhibition, other Australian galleries. The Toowoomba Gallery Society Inc. provides prize money for first place and runner-up, while the Gallery acquires works for the City Collection.
The Toowoomba Biennial Emerging Artists Award Exhibition, held in alternate years from 2004, involves artists who identify as emerging and reside in southern Queensland. Artworks are selected for exhibition at the Gallery and then, from that initial award exhibition, some works are acquired to tour primarily to regional schools as the Crates on Wheels exhibition.
