Amber_Plumes_w_2011The disconnection between our natural environment and urban development is the broader theme behind the current exhibition hanging at Crows Nest Regional Art Gallery.

Titled Absence in presence, the exhibition is a collection of paintings, drawings and prints by Toowoomba artist Helen Nkansah.

The exhibition will be opened by Ravensbourne landscape architect Richard Jones on Friday June 3 at 6pm and will be on display until June 26.

The works are part of a graduation project for Ms Nkansah’s Bachelor of Arts degree through Curtin University in Perth.

Her work investigates architectural development and its impact on endangered birds.

“Whilst technology has contributed positively to people’s lives, it has also isolated people from the natural world and could account for their feelings of survival within their built environments,” the artist said.

“Paradoxically, the natural environment is also in survivor mode, isolated by urban development.”

In this exhibition Helen Nkansah investigates the concept about the nature of our relationship between these issues that appear invisible, and attempts to communicate the duality of not just what is left but also what is lost.
