Toowoomba's reputation as a cycling destination is flourishing thanks to the late November opening of the city's $2.34 million cycling criterium track.

Australia's newest and most challenging criterium track has transformed the south-east corner of Toowoomba Showgrounds off Harvey Road at Glenvale.

The opening of the new reserve signals an exciting time for cycling in Toowoomba.

The track offers a fantastic new recreation facility for the whole community to use and enjoy.

Whether you are on training wheels, enjoy a social bike ride, harbour dreams to become a professional cyclist or ride competitively, the track will suit your level of skill and fitness.

For the uninitiated, a cycling criterium track might be a bit of an oddity.

Forget comparisons with velodromes. Criterium tracks offer a self-contained road circuit for criterium races.

The 1.76km circuit is unlike all other criterium tracks around the country.

The site's undulating terrain sets the showgrounds facility apart from all other Australian circuits, which makes it an appealing facility for elite state and national competition or training.

Six different track configurations offer a versatile and flexible layout with distances ranging from 350m to 1.76km.  (See track layout illustration)

Toowoomba's new purpose-built cycling criterium track offers all cyclists a safe recreation and training venue.

Limited test rides have scored rave reviews for the track design and surface.

Best of all, the facility offers cyclists a track dedicated entirely to their use free from other vehicles.

Council has erected signs at the venue detailing simple safety instructions for all users.

CriteriumRulesAll cyclists must obey the following track rules when using the venue:

  • All cyclists must wear a helmet
  • All tracks are to be ridden anti-clockwise
  • Give way to cyclists on Track One (or full course layout – 1.76km)
  • Always overtake on the right
  • Care should be taken when overtaking children or inexperienced cyclists
  • Early morning users must consider noise levels affecting nearby residents

Other facility rules include:

  • Walkers/joggers are prohibited from the track
  • Pedestrians must give way to cyclists and use extreme caution when crossing the track
  • No motorised vehicles are permitted
  • Dogs must be kept on a leash
  • All rubbish must be placed in bins provided

The venue is open free to public use unless the track has been booked for specific uses.

A noticeboard at the venue will indicate whether the track is open or closed to the public.

Bookings can be made by contacting council on 131 872.

The venue has car parking and an amenities block with unisex change rooms, showers, toilets and a disabled toilet. One toilet is open at all times.

Access to the small clubroom and facilities in the amenities block can be arranged when hiring the venue.

The project is a joint initiative between council and the state government.

The site is held in a co-tenant agreement between council and the Royal Agricultural Society of Queensland (RAS).

The Queensland Government provided $997,050 to Toowoomba Regional Council to construct a criterium track to get more Queenslanders active through sport and recreation.
