There will be two categories, one for pirmary students and one for sedondary students.

What is a book trailer?

A book trailer is a movie trailer for a book. It uses multimedia such as images, video, animation, music and words to compel the viewer to read the book. It has to be persuasive, engaging, captivating and exciting. Some book trailers are:

Competition Guidelines

  • The book trailer must be based on any book aimed at an audience of the age group of the age entry criteria.
  • Maximum one to two minutes in length.
  • Your book trailer must adhere to copyright laws. All work must be original, copyright free or permission must have been obtained for borrowed images and/or music. This includes use of the cover page of the book, or any text from the book. Copyright must be sought from the publishers of the book. Inclusion of an email or letter with entry form is essential.
  • One entry per participant is permitted.
  • An entry form must be submitted with each entry. Entry forms are available from your local library.

Entries may be submitted:

  • On a well labelled CD, DVD or USB drive. Please label appropriately if you would like the CD, DVD or USB drive returned. Members of the same class (limit of 5 per class, see school entries note below) or group may submit entries on the one CD, DVD or USB drive.
  • Uploaded to You Tube or another web application. Link must be clearly written on entry form.

Entry deadline is 5pm, Monday 6th August 2012 at the Toowoomba City Library.
Late entries will not be accepted

All entrants must be a member of Toowoomba Regional Libraries.

School entries:

If a school is entering on behalf of their students, please have an in school competition so the top 5 from each class can be entered.

Participation certificates will be available from the library for all entries, including school based entries. Please forward a class list of students who have participated in the school based competition, with individual membership numbers, to liz.derouet@toowoombaRC,qld.gov.au with address details for posting.

Competition Categories

There will be one overall category for each age group.

The age groups are:

  • Grades 5-7
  • Grade 8-10
  • Grades 11-12

There may be other prizes awarded deemed by the judges at the time of judging, for example, encouragement awards.

Judging Criteria

Section 1 (all three must pass for section 2 to be assessed):

  • Appropriate book for audience (same age as creator).
  • Length – maximum one to two minutes.
  • Copyright laws followed.

Section 2 (rating out of 7 will be given to obtain final score).

  • Trailer encourages the viewer to be interested in the book.
  • Transitions are smooth with a logical presentation of information.
  • Images and music create a mood suitable to the book.
  • Content of the book is clear to the viewer but does not give the ending away.
  • Proficient and creative use of chosen technology.
  • Trailer is original.
  • Presentation is consistent in all elements.
