Web searching

Useful Links - a variety of useful links that our Librarians have come across in the carrying out of their duties and felt would be of benefit to the community.

The World Wide Web (or www), the graphical front-end to the Internet, offers many searching tools or search engines, as they are commonly known, to navigate the resources of the Internet.

They normally index titles or words of home pages, some with more success than others. Some offer more advanced searching techniques - always read the help text for each.

Some are meta search engines, where your search term is submitted to a number of search engines and the results combined. Only a few of the thousands are listed here - they are generally accepted as the best. Further information can be found at Search Engine Watch (opens in new window)
