Definitions of terms used in Cemeteries:
| Term | Definition |

| Burial | The process of placing the deceased person in a coffin/casket and then into the ground ("grave") and covering it over with soil. Burials can occur in either a lawn section (where a small plaque or monument may be erected at the head of the grave) or in a monumental section (where a monument partially or completely covers the grave). |
| Columbarium | An arrangement of niches that may include a wall or an entire building, with niches for the entombment of cremated remains. |
| Burial Rights | An exclusive right of entitlement to use an Interment Site which is granted by Council to a person who has legal right to authorise an interment. |
| Columbarium Niche | A space in a Columbarium, designed to accommodate cremated remains. |
| Cremated Remains | The remains after the cremation process is completed |
| Cremation Allotment | Is a small allotment site for cremated remains; costs less than a traditional burial because a smaller area is required to be dug and backfilled at the time of interment. |
| Crypts | Is an "in-ground" or “above-ground” burial chamber constructed of steel-reinforced concrete, gravel, and other waterproof materials that uses a drainage system to keep moisture out |
| Entombment | Means the placement of human remains in a crypt. |
| Grave | A space of land in the Cemetery used or intended to be used for the burial of human remains. |
| Extra Depth | An interment will be dug to a depth of 8 feet, allowing 3 interments in the one allotment. Prior approval is required. |
| Interment | The burial of a deceased person or placement of the deceased person in an above ground mausoleum or vault; or the placement of cremated ashes in a grave, columbarium, rose garden or vault. |
| Future Cemetery Services | Means the selection and payment of cemetery services that will be provided when the need arises in the future. Cemetery Services that can be requested in this application form include interment, allocation of an interment site or memorial plaquepall bearer service/s. |
| Interment Site | A grave, crypt, niche, vault or rose garden. An Interment Site does not provide any property rights to the applicant or deceased. |
| Mausoleum | An above ground structure for interment of human remains. It may contain a combination of crypts, niches or columbarium's. |
| Memorial | A plaque, grave marker or headstone identifying a grave or graves; or a name plate, name bar, or inscription identifying a crypt or niche. |
| Monument | A memorial made principally of stone which extends above the surface of the earth, in upright form. The dimensions for Monuments allowed by the Cemetery are available to Contractors at the Cemetery office on request. |
| Memorial Works | Any addition, alternation, reconfiguration or physical change to the structural element of a memorial and associated elements (e.g. memorial perimeter fencing etc) which changes its physical appearance. Items included in this definition but are not limited to: painting, relettering, repair where glues or adhesives are required, sand blasting or use of abrasives, straightening, underpinning, restoration. |
| Niche | A space in a mausoleum or columbarium used or intended to be used for the inurnment of cremated human remains. |
| Payment Plan | A conditional agreement between Council and a customer for the purchase of approved future cemetery services, payment of which is required within 24 months. |
| Rose Garden | Interment site for the placement of cremated remains. |
| Transfer the Allocation of an Interment Site | Means transfering the allocation of an interment site in a Toowoomba Regional Council controlled Cemetery to another person. The transfer of the allocation does not provide any property rights to the interment site. This application may be made by a person to whom the interment site is currently allocated, or by a person authorised to act on behalf of a person to whom the interment site is allocated. |
| Urn | A receptacle designated for burial into which the cremated human remains of one person are placed, which is usually made of bronze, bronze plate, durable plastics, or a combination thereof. |
| Vase | A receptacle for the placement of flowers on a grave, lawn crypt, lawn niche, or memorial. |
| Vault | A compartment in a mausoleum, or an underground chamber, in which human remains are or may be interred. |
| Permit for Memorials Works | Authorisation allowing memorials works to be carried out in a Council controlled cemetery. |
