The Toowoomba Regional Council Cemeteries Digitisation Project commenced mid 2008, involving the conversion of all existing interment registers of council controlled cemeteries. As interment registers were kept in different formats including hard copy books, spreadsheets, databases and financial software, the sorting of these records was extremely time-consuming with staff working on this component of the project for many months.
Research was carried out on cemetery management software and an affordable system was purchased to bring council's records into the 21st century. Council staff then worked with the Canadian software supplier and modified the software which has resulted in a Best Practice Cemetery Management System.
All records have been converted into this software and a new Deceased Records Search has been developed. Photographs have been taken of all memorials at the Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery and Oz Cemeteries (opens in a new window) have kindly donated photos of Council controlled regional cemeteries. These photos have been linked to the records and are available to view/print via the deceased search.
The newly created deceased search gives researchers the ability to print an A4 colour page showing the Deceased's details, maps on how to get to the interment site and a photo of the memorial (if available).
