Help us conserve our water – it’s a limited and precious resource! Here are some handy hints for conserving this precious resource. Read the brochure WaterWise Homes in the Related documents below.washveg

In the kitchen

  • Keep a jug of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap for cold drinks
  • Collect the water you use for rinsing fruit and vegetables in a sink or a container then re-use the water for your houseplants
  • Cook food in as little water as possible - this will also retain more of the nutrients
  • Avoid rinsing dishes under a running tap before putting them in the dishwasher - scrape instead
  • Run your dishwasher only when it is full and you could save 1,576 litres a month.

In the toilet

  • Install dual-flush toilets
  • Make sure your toilet button doesn’t stick open after flushing.
  • Put food colouring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into the toilet bowl, you have a leak
  • Get the leak fixed and you can save more than 2,250 litres a month.

In the bathroom

  • Sing shorter songs in the shower. Time your shower to keep it to two minutes. You’ll save up to 3,790 litres a month.
  • Cut a minute off your shower to save up to 25 litres
  • Exchange an old shower head for an 3 star(WELS rated) water efficient shower rose from council - a free service (while stocks last)
  • Plug the bathtub before turning the water on, and then adjust the temperature as the tub fills up
  • Install tap aerators to reduce the flow
  • Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. This will save an average of 5 litres every time
  • Turn the water off while you shampoo and condition your hair and you can save more than 180 litres a week.

In the laundry

  • Check the water efficiency WELS star rating (opens in new window) of washing machines and dishwashers. For example, front load washing machines use less water than most top loader machines.
