The Queensland Greens are currently campaigning in Toowoomba to support the “Yes" case for the Water Futures poll and will bring a bus load of supporters to the city on July 29 to hand out ‘how to vote’ cards.
“The debate in Toowoomba as yet hasn't focused on the new dams issue,” Greens spokesman Michael Kane said.
“We feel if we can get the message of how destructive dams are to families, farmers, regional economies and the environment then many people in Toowoomba will support the “Yes” case, perhaps reducing the need for the construction of new dams in other regional centres in Queensland,” Mr Kane said.
Councillor Sue Englart with the environment portfolio was elated to have the support of The Greens.
“Toowoomba’s water poll is going to have far reaching effects for this country and The Greens rightly believe recycling should be happening all around South East Queensland,” Cr Englart.
“I don’t want to weigh into the new dam debate, suffice to say that a dam at Emu Creek is out of the question, but it is great to have support from elsewhere in Queensland.”
The Greens have a number of activities planned to show their support and lend strength to the “yes” campaign, beginning with a public information forum at the Jacaranda Room, at Grand Central shopping centre on Saturday, July 22 between 2pm and 4pm.
Speakers at the forum will include the Greens’ Drew Hutton, representative from the save the Mary River Campaign Glenda Pickersgill, speakers on sustainable water use and our own Cr Sue Englart. Other representatives from Water Futures team at Toowoomba City Council will also be present.
Greens volunteers will be in Toowoomba’s CBD handing out educational material on Water Futures and sustainable water use policies on Saturday morning July 22. On polling day the Greens will be bringing a busload of more than 30 volunteers, who will be coming from as far as Gympie, Beaudesert, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
An invitation is being extended to all supporters of Water Futures in Toowoomba and surrounds, to join in the fun on poll day, Cr Englart said. Volunteers should contact the Water Futures team on 4688 6488.
