A recent survey of Toowoomba’s accommodation industry found 71% were in support of Toowoomba City Council’s Water Futures Project.
Fifty-eight businesses responded to the survey which included nearly all of the hotels, motels, caravan parks, apartments and B&B’s. The survey results are attached.
The survey was an initiative of the Hotel Motel Accommodation Association of Australia (HMAA) and facilitated by Toowoomba City Council.
Zone Chairman of the HMAA, Mr. Stephen O’Brien, said that having a safe and sustainable water supply was a crucial issue for any business.
“Without water, we have nothing” he said. “With a guaranteed water supply we will be able to look after our guests and have confidence in Toowoomba’s future.”
Mr. O’Brien questioned the NO campaign’s use of unsubstantiated opinions to support their view that recycled water is bad for the accommodation industry in Toowoomba.
“This research disproves statements used by the NO campaign that the accommodation industry doesn’t support Water Futures,” he said. “The vast majority wants the project to be implemented.”
“Every visitor to London knows they are drinking treated wastewater but it doesn’t stop them visiting,” he said.
Tourism and Marketing portfolio chair, Cr Michelle Schneider, welcomed the survey results.
“It shows that the industry are supportive of what Council is doing,” she said.
“Only a vocal minority is calling Toowoomba derogatory names. If they supported Water Futures like the accommodation industry supports the project, it would help our city enormously.”
