recycle_wheelie_binRecycling in Toowoomba is simple. Each household can access the kerbside recycling system through their 240 litre yellow lid bin which is collected fortnightly on the same day as the dark green refuse bin.

A special recycling truck is dedicated just to collecting recyclables.

Recyclable materials are transported to the JJ Richards & Sons Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) for sorting and distribution to industries that re-process these valuable resources.

The system is simple to use and cost effective. The environmentally friendly collection vehicles all have low noise and low emission pollution.

With the good recycling habits of Toowoomba's residents our recycling system will save tonnes of high quality resources each year that would have ended up buried at the landfill site.

Recycling bins are 240 litre with a yellow lid.

What can be put in the recycling bin?

Recyclables are sorted by hand and machine and then sent off to be processed. The following items can be placed into the yellow lid bin for recycling:

  • Newspaper, cardboard, junk mail, magazines
  • Plastic bottles and containers
  • Glass bottles and jars (no lids please)
  • Steel and aluminium cans and empty aerosols
  • Juice and milk cartons
  • All plastic containers (but not those which have contained hazardous materials)

Simple recycling rules

It is important that only the items mentioned above are put in the recycling bin. To make the recycling process clean and efficient please follow these simple recycling rules:

  • Take lids off all containers before placing them in your yellow lid recyclables bin
  • Give recyclable containers a quick rinse in used washing up water before placing them in your recyclables bin
  • Place recyclables loosely in your recyclables bin, please do not put them in plastic bags

What can't be put in the recycling bin?

The following items should never be placed in the recycling bin as they interfere with the recycling process and can pose health and safety risks to the people who sort them:

  • Expanded polystyrene (e.g. foam packaging)
  • Disposable nappies
  • Crockery, ceramics and ovenware
  • Green waste
  • Window glass
  • Kitty litter
  • Foodstuffs and kitchen scraps
  • Light bulbs
  • Syringes
