Environment & Waste Waste & recycling Household waste collection

Tenders are being sought for a new region wide kerbside collection contract to commence on 1 July 2013.

Since amalgamation, council has operated 8 different contracts, each with a different service.  Until the contracts expire, changes to the existing waste collection services can not be changed. Council's waste collection contracts expire on 30th June 2013.

Waste Services are working towards an expanded and standardised waste collection service contract for the majority of the region's residents.

In those areas that have a kerbside collection service, bins should be placed on the footpath, no more than one metre from the kerb edge, with the wheels and handles facing your house by 6.00 am on collection days.

If there is no kerb, place in a safe position one metre from the edge of the bitumen/gravel. If your bin is placed incorrectly, collection is not guaranteed.  To find out more about bin collection in your area, contact us

Bins for new homes
For new homes in a defined collection area, contact us to obtain your bin(s).  In some locations a new wheelie bin will not be issued unless the final inspection of the dwelling and plumbing/drainage has been approved by council.

Broken or stolen bins
Broken or stolen bins can be either repaired or replaced. Contact us to arrange a repair or replacement.

Bins for non-rubbish collection areas
If you live outside a defined collection area, you can purchase a bin. You will be responsible for taking the contents to the tip. Wheelie bins can be purchased from JJ Richards at a cost of $99 (including GST) for personal use (No garbage pick up service included). This is for a 240L bin. Bins must be picked up from JJ Richards at 145 North Street, Toowoomba. There is no choice of colour.  For further information, please telephone JJ Riachards and Sons on 4642 2123.

Bins are also available from a number of local hardware stores.   Check your yellow pages directory for contact details.

Additional bins
In some areas, more than one bin is available for household rubbish and/or recycling. Contact council to order another bin. The second service will incur a charge on the property's rates invoice.  Property owners can request an additional service.   Tenants in rental premises must obtain permission from the property owner first.

Public holidays
Waste collection services continue as normal during all public holidays.

Refusal
Excess weight (from building rubble, bricks, and rocks placed in your bin) or excess capacity (overflowing bins or extra waste placed out next to the bin) will not be collected.

Building rubble, bricks adn rocks can jam the truck's compactors causing mechanical breakdowns.   Do not placed these waste types in your bin.  Many waste facilities offer areas for building and construction waste to be stockpiled.  It is then crushed and used and often reused on site.

One -Off  or special waste collection

If you have more waste than can fit in your bin and require a one-off collection, for a small fee you may organise a collection from your bin by contacting council on 131 872.
