Toowoomba Regional Council wants young people to be heavily involved in the growth and prosperity of the region. The council encourages youth and children to get involved in their local community by making the most of council programs and facilities.

Exciting events and projects in the region include:

  • Summer Riot
  • Postbox Gig Guide
  • Youth Week
  • Mayoral School Achievement Medal.

 

Youth Services officers across the region provide movie nights, holiday activities including after-school sporting activities and youth groups. There are specialist youth workers in Toowoomba and Millmerran.

Summer Riot

Summer Riot (formerly Eidecan Festival) is a music event in Toowoomba that showcases local talent and is aimed at supporting the youth and music scene in the community. A thumping mix of music and raw energy from the region's emerging bands, the festival features three gigs a year and an 'Ignite the Night' glowstick party at the end of the year.

Showcasing the talents and creativity of young people in the region, Summer Riot offers excitement and fun for the whole family. Each event is drug and alcohol free and open to all-ages.

The festival started in 2000 as a way for young people to take an active role in their own lives and to encourage others to do the same. The emphasis is on having a go and is designed to show what can be achieved if you set your mind to something.

Mayoral school achievement medals

Toowoomba Regional Council, through the Office of the Mayor, initiated the Mayoral School Achievement Medal to recogniseMayoralAwards2010_email_112 the achievements and individual contribution young people make to their school community within the Toowoomba region.

The Mayoral School Achievement Medal is given to one student from each school within the Toowoomba Regional Council area who has:

  • shown a commitment to completing their specific educational needs;
  • set and achieved an individual educational or social goal during adverse times; and/or
  • shown an improvement in their personal development or social skills.

 

Each nominee who meets the selection guidelines will be presented with an Achievement Medal and certificate by the Mayor. The presentation will be made at a special function attended by each child’s teacher and other representatives of the Toowoomba region's school community and the recipients’ family. 

Youth commitment

Our commitment to local young people is to assist in building the capacity of young people and service organisations tosmell_the_flowers_EM build a positive and cohesive community. It supports, facilitates and implements youth initiatives across a wide range of council and/or community services that:

  • increase the range of cultural, recreational and artistic programs and projects; 
  • showcase the local talents of young people and youth service organisations;
  • promote and celebrate the varied talents of local young people;
  • respond to young people and youth organisations through various mediums which include referral, advice, consultation, advocacy and community events (both internal and external);
  • develop information and educational resources which include forums, workshops, newsletters, service directories, pamphlets, exhibitions and displays; and
  • assist young people to implement projects that engage local communities including activities that promote individual, family and community wellbeing.
