The complexities of life in Oakey have been revealed in a report prepared from a community, government and non-government agency consultation held late in 2008. The report, titled The Oakey Jigsaw highlights both positives and negatives of life in a town in Toowoomba’s shadow, from great employment opportunities to lack of public transport; proactive schools to low literacy levels in some pockets; good health services to drug and alcohol abuse.

An initiative of Oakey High and Oakey Primary Schools, and Council's Oakey Service Centre, the community consultation was aimed at uncovering some of the social issues in town, highlighting the community and government services that do exist, and investigating how other services not available in Oakey can be made accessible.

Recommendations from the report include:

  • Establishing an Aboriginal organisation
  • Establishing a youth task group
  • Identifying transport solutions
  • Developing a ‘vision’ for Oakey
  • Publishing an Oakey Services Guide
  • Establishing a Neighbourhood Centre and
  • Setting up a task force to ensure these things happen.
