The Disaster Management Presentation team form the Toowoomba Regional Council and Emergency Management Queensland (Norman Fry and Jay Dobbin) visited the Gabbinbar State School today (Thursday 10 September) and presented on the subjects of Disasters and the Health issues relating to disasters to the year 6/7 classes. Around 100 students took part in the afternoon's presentations.

Jay Dobbin (Youth Development Officer, Emergency Management Queensland ) and Norman Fry (Disaster Management Coordinator/LOcal SES Controller, Toowoomba Regional Council) visited the Pittsworth State High this morning and gave the Year 9 students presentations on Disasters and Disaster Recovery. Ninety students attended the presentation period, which was well received.

On Tuesday 15 June the Disaster Management Presentation Team (Jay Dobbin, Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) and Norman Fry, Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) visited Concordia Lutheran College and gave two presentations to the Year 9 students. The Year 9 students had just completed their natural disasters studies. The presentation team was able to expand on these with additional information regarding what EMQ and TRC would do in times of preparation and response for local disasters in the Toowoomba Regional area. The Year 9 students displayed a number of disasters projects that they had recently completed. The standard and content of the projects was excellent.

Are you preparedScouts from the Bunya Park troop visited the SES Toowoomba Group last night, Wednesday 10 November. The evening's program included presentations by the Toowoomba Regional Council's Disaster Management Coordinator and the Youth Officer from Emergency Management Queensland. After the presentations the scouts were then given the opportunity to participate in a couple of hands on activities involving radios and height safety equipment. This type of activity is provided by the Toowoomba Regional Council as part of its public disaster education program.

altOn Friday 9 October 09, the 2nd Toowoomba Scout Group visited the Toowoomba State Emergency Services Group. Thirty two scouts received presentations from the Toowoomba Regional Council Disaster Management Coordinator and the Emergency Management Queensland Youth Development Officer on disasters and the role of the Toowoomba Regional Council in disasters.

On the 23 September 2009 Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) wrote to all School Principals in the Toowoomba region offering an opportunity for the combined TRC and Emergency Management Queensland team to provide a presentation or presentations on various aspects of "Disasters" or "Disaster Management" to their pupils. The presentations are free of charge and are intended as part of the TRC outcome of disseminating disaster management information to the public in an effort to make people better informed and assist in making them more prepared for a likely disaster. The school's program has already commenced with about 200 pupils having received a presentation to date. These presentations are also available for community groups. Requests for presentations can be made via the email contact on this website.

altJay Dobbin (Emergency Management Queensland) and Norman Fry (TRC Disaster Management Coordinator) visited the Gowrie State School on Wednesday 5 May to provide presentations on disasters and health in disasters issues. 57 students from years 5,6,and 7 attended the presentations. The presentations covered the types and categories of disasters, the phases of disasters, the health issues associated with a disaster. The presentations provided a good opportunity for the students to interact with the presenters and discuss the issues and various solutions. The students received a CD rom each containing an interactive package to assist them to be better prepared for hazards and emergencies.

Disaster Management Officers Visit St Thomas More’s School

Chairman of the Toowoomba Regional Council’s Local Disaster Management Group (Councillor Noel Strohfeld and the Manager of Community and Business Planning (Mr Kevin Wruck) visited the St Thomas More’s school on Thursday 3 February. They spoke to the students of Stage 3 about disaster event management and in particular the recent flood events that have occurred throughout the Toowoomba Regional council area.

The students were surprised to learn how many different people from many diverse organisations it took to ensure that everyone was safe and the effort that was needed to keep the coordination of the disaster event going.

The Toowoomba Regional Council Disaster Management Coordinator/SES Local Controller, Norman Fry visited St Mary's College on Friday 12 March and gave a presentation to a group of Year 11 and 12 students. The presentation was on the subject of how climate change might impact future natural disasters.
