There are around 5000 people who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander living in the Toowoomba region.
A large percentage of this population is considered in the youth category.
While the traditional land is generally accepted as being Gaibul/Jarrowair country, there is a large contingent of predominately Aboriginal people who have re-located to the Toowoomba Regional Council area for various reasons.
Our commitment to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people is to assist in building the capacity of the local Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander community through providing advice and support to enhance a positive and cohesive community.

In 2007, Toowoomba Regional Council and the Toowoomba Community Capacity Building (CCB) group developed an active working partnership. This forged the strengths/needs analysis project where research was commissioned to produce the report 'Creating a future; Owning the past and present.'
The report highlights the current strengths and challenges in the Toowoomba Indigenous community and provides recommendations to address issues outlined in the report. To deliver these recommedations, the CCB reviewed the groups stucture and incorporated sub- groups. The CCB framework now enables the group and its members to monitor and deliver service within specific outcome areas, all represented within the findings and reccommendations of the report.
