About Council News & publications Newsletters Sky’s the limit for Aerodrome upgrade

Toowoomba Aerodrome is expected to return to full operational service this month.

The Aerodrome upgrade has extended the runway by 100 metres in landing distance and 220 metres in take-off run available, enabling existing airport users to take off with heavier loads than previously possible.

The upgrade has included the use of a energy-saving or LED lighting system on the main runway, believed to be a first for any aerodrome in Australia.

Currently, Skytrans has Dash 8-100 series 36-seater aircraft providing a govt-subsidised service on the Brisbane to Thargomindah and Brisbane to Mt Isa routes.

Council is preparing to call for public tenders to provide additional commercial airline services including flights to and from Sydney, demand for which has been identified in market research. Designed to optimise safety and operational capability within the constraints of the current site, the upgrade also included a realignment and widening of the eastern taxiway, a widening of the central taxiway for larger aircraft and an extension of the existing apron parking area.

CivilTeam Engineering (CTE) contractors commenced on January 4 and despite minor wet weather delays, were expected to complete the works in June.
