Djuan Road bridge north of Crows Nest has been closed due to public safety concerns.

A sealed side track on the northern side of the bridge offers an alternative route in conditions other than heavy rain.

Council engineers have assessed the old wooden bridge and found it to be unsafe due mainly to slippage of the banks of Djuan Creek at both ends of the bridge.

The bridge already had a 5 tonne road limit so heavy vehicles should have been using the side track.

Due to rainfall over the weekend, the slippage worsened and it was found necessary to close the bridge due to concerns that it may collapse.

The bridge has been identified for replacement under the NDRRA (Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements) flood recovery program.

Barricades will remain in place until works commence to remove the existing structure and construct the new bridge during 2012.

Motorists are advised the side track can flood during heavy periods of rain and delays of an hour or more are possible depending on the level of flooding.

An alternate route via Haden-Crows Nest Road is available but adds an extra 15km to the trip.

Toowoomba Regional Council apologises for the inconvenience caused by the closure and thanks road users for their patience during these works.
