About Council News & publications News releases Construction advances on Jellicoe St bridge

Installing the foundations of the new Jellicoe Street bridge will begin early next week, weather permitting.

Actual bridge construction starts with the installation of piles – long, vertical concrete posts that support the bridge. Delivery of these piles will begin on the eastern side of the bridge tomorrow (Friday).

The piling operation will involve driving the piles into the creek banks, initially on the eastern side and then on the western side of the bridge.

The piling rig used by construction contractors F K Gardner & Sons produces considerably less noise than conventional machines and every reasonable effort will be made to limit disruption.

Pre-boring and driving of the piles is expected to take place on the eastern side between Monday, February 6 and Saturday, February 11.

It is anticipated piles will be delivered to the western side of the bridge on Wednesday, February 8 with pre-boring and driving of the piles starting Monday, February 13, weather permitting.

Residents and business owners near the work site can expect to hear some increased noise levels. Hammering construction noise and vibrations are caused by the repetitive action of the piling rig.

Pedestrians are reminded there will be no access to the corner of Jellicoe and Waverley streets until the project is completed in early April, weather permitting.

Local traffic access only will be permitted beyond the intersections of Jellicoe and Kenilworth streets, Waverley and Isaac streets, Jellicoe and Brook streets and  Mort, Jellicoe and West streets.

The construction work site is operational between 6.30am and 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday (weather permitting) and traffic may be stopped for short intervals to allow for construction machinery to enter and exit work sites during these times.

Council apologises for any inconvenience caused during these works.
