Electoral Commission Queensland

A number of restrictions apply to Council and Councillors during the 'Caretaker Period', from when nominations are called for the quadrennial election until the declaration of the polls. The aim of this protocol is to clearly separate the Councillor's role as a Councillor and that of a candidate and minimise any perception that Council resources are being used for electoral purposes. The protocol is also intended to provide guidance on how it is proposed to maintain Council's services and routine activities during the Caretaker Period.

For more information please refer to the Caretaker Period Protocol - Policy 2.24 (PDF opens in new window).

This policy describes our approach to the management of election signage during an election period. The policy aims to facilitate electoral advertising as a necessary part of the democratic process while mitigating adverse impacts; in particular:

  • Distraction to road users
  • Potential safety issues and
  • Adverse impacts on the amenity of local government controlled areas and roads.

For more information please read the Election Signs Policy 2.23 (PDF opens in new window).

The role of a councillor is a demanding one. It requires knowledge of local government systems, an interest in people and a willingness to invest time and energy in serving the needs and interests of the local community.
